Recovering against Dinamo Tirana

Dinamo București began the 1989/90 Cup Winners’ Cup with a 1–0 away defeat against Dinamo Tirana. A 2–0 home victory reversed the tie and secured qualification 2–1 on aggregate.

Eight goals against Panathinaikos

The second round brought an emphatic response against Panathinaikos: a 2–0 victory in Athens followed by a 6–1 home win. The 8–1 aggregate result carried Dinamo into the quarter-finals.

Two victories against Partizan

Dinamo beat Partizan Belgrade 2–1 at home and 2–0 away in March 1990. Winning both legs secured a 4–1 aggregate success and a place in the last four.

Anderlecht close the route to the final

The semi-final was decided by two narrow defeats. Anderlecht won 1–0 in Brussels on 4 April and by the same score in Bucharest on 18 April. Dinamo were eliminated 2–0 on aggregate, one round short of the final.

A campaign with momentum

The first hurdle had required a recovery after defeat in Tirana. Once through, Dinamo found their rhythm against Panathinaikos and Partizan, winning both legs in each tie. The semi-final against Anderlecht was much tighter: a single goal separated the teams in each match, and the final slipped away despite the run that had preceded it.

The campaign beyond its ending

Across eight matches, Dinamo recorded five wins and three defeats, scoring 14 goals and conceding five. Three successful ties and a European semi-final make this a notable campaign, even though the final remained out of reach.
