A quarter-final against Italian opposition

Dinamo București reached the 1988/89 Cup Winners’ Cup quarter-finals after eliminating Kuusysi Lahti and Dundee United. Sampdoria stood between them and the last four.

A late equaliser in Bucharest

The first leg on 1 March 1989 finished 1–1. Claudiu Vaișcovici scored from the penalty spot for Dinamo, but Gianluca Vialli equalised late in the match, giving Sampdoria an away goal.

No defeat, yet no qualification

The return on 15 March, played in Cremona, ended 0–0. With the aggregate score still 1–1, Sampdoria qualified on away goals. Dinamo had lost neither match, but the goal conceded in Bucharest proved decisive.

A goal that changed the tie

Vaișcovici’s penalty put Dinamo in front, but Vialli’s late equaliser gave Sampdoria an away goal. In the return in Cremona, Dinamo prevented the Italian side from scoring again; they could not find the goal needed to reverse the balance. Two draws told only part of the story, because the location of that one conceded goal decided who advanced.

One season before the semi-final

This quarter-final belongs to 1988/89. Dinamo went a stage further in the following edition, reaching the 1989/90 semi-finals against Anderlecht—a separate campaign also preserved in this collection.
