The champions meet in Monaco
The 1986 European Super Cup brought together European Cup holders Steaua București and Cup Winners’ Cup holders Dynamo Kyiv. Although it belonged to the 1986 edition, the one-off final took place at the Stade Louis II in Monaco on 24 February 1987.
The decisive free-kick
Gheorghe Hagi scored the only goal shortly before half-time, curling in a free-kick from distance. Steaua protected the 1–0 lead and added another continental trophy to the European Cup won in Seville.
A new chapter after Seville
Steaua arrived in Monaco as European Cup holders, but Dynamo Kyiv brought a major reputation of their own as Cup Winners’ Cup winners. Hagi’s free-kick gave the match its defining image. The final whistle confirmed another trophy and gave the Seville generation a second continental title to celebrate.
A second summit
The victory gave Romanian club football a second major European honour in the same generation. It also made Hagi’s Steaua debut a trophy-winning occasion, with Anghel Iordănescu leading the side as head coach.
