Romanian club’s score first.

A first group match in Rome

CFR Cluj’s first Champions League group-stage match took them to the Olimpico on 16 September 2008. Christian Panucci put Roma ahead. Before half-time, Juan Culio combined with Eugen Trică and equalised.

Culio scores again

Soon after the restart, Culio struck for a second time. Maurizio Trombetta’s side now had a 2–1 lead to defend at Roma, and they kept it. CFR had won away from home on their first appearance in the group stage.

The rest of the group

Roma won 3–1 when the clubs met again in Cluj, and CFR did not progress. The opening win was still a result few could have asked for more from: two Culio goals and three points in Rome.
