An English opponent in Bucharest

On 15 September 2005, Dinamo București hosted Everton in the first round of the UEFA Cup. The visitors had come through an unsuccessful Champions League qualifying tie against Villarreal.

Four goals after the interval

Claudiu Niculescu opened the scoring before Joseph Yobo equalised. From 1–1 at half-time, Dinamo transformed the match: Ianis Zicu, Florentin Petre and Florin Bratu, who scored twice, completed a 5–1 victory.

The match opens up

At half-time the scores were level and Everton still had every reason to believe the tie was manageable. That changed dramatically after the interval. Dinamo’s movement and finishing turned a close contest into a commanding lead, with substitute Florin Bratu adding two goals. The size of the first-leg advantage became crucial when Everton won at Goodison Park.

Finishing the job

Everton won the return at Goodison Park 1–0, but Dinamo’s advantage proved decisive. A 5–2 aggregate success secured a place in the group stage, making the Bucharest performance part of a successful qualification rather than an isolated result.
