Hamburg arrive as European champions

Hamburger SV were defending the European Cup when they met Dinamo București in the second round of the 1983/84 competition. On 19 October, Dinamo gave the holders a 3–0 defeat in Bucharest. Ionel Augustin, Gheorghe Mulțescu and Costel Orac scored the goals.

Finishing the tie in Hamburg

There was still a return to play. Hamburg won it 3–2 on 2 November, but Dinamo’s two goals there took their aggregate total to five. The 5–3 result put Dinamo through and ended Hamburg’s title defence.

A run that reached the last four

Beating the holders was followed by further progress. Dinamo went on to reach the semi-finals, making the Hamburg tie part of one of the club’s strongest European campaigns.
