A commanding start against Sparta Prague
Steaua opened with a 5–1 away victory against Sparta Prague. A 2–2 draw in Bucharest completed a 7–3 aggregate success and set the tone for a productive European campaign.
Two wins against Spartak Moscow
A 3–0 home win and a 2–1 away victory eliminated Spartak Moscow 5–1 on aggregate. Steaua entered the quarter-finals unbeaten.
Turning the tie against IFK Göteborg
The first setback came in Sweden, where IFK Göteborg won 1–0. Steaua answered with a 5–1 victory in Bucharest, qualifying 5–2 on aggregate.
Galatasaray and a return to the final
A 4–0 home victory against Galatasaray put Steaua within reach of another final. The 1–1 return in Istanbul confirmed qualification 5–1 on aggregate. Three years after Seville, the Romanian club had reached the European Cup final again.
Milan prevail in Barcelona
At the Camp Nou on 24 May 1989, Arrigo Sacchi’s Milan won 4–0. Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten scored twice each. Steaua finished as runners-up.
From comeback to final
The road back to the European Cup final contained both authority and adversity. Steaua scored five at Sparta, eliminated Spartak and then overturned a first-leg defeat against Göteborg with five goals in Bucharest. Galatasaray were beaten over two legs before Milan brought the journey to a painful end. A final score cannot tell the whole story of the months it took to get there.
Remembering the whole campaign
The final defeat should be read alongside the route that preceded it. Steaua scored 22 goals across nine matches, with five wins, two draws and two defeats. Reaching a second European Cup final remains a major achievement in Romanian club football.
