Romanian club’s score first.

An early setback in Glasgow

On 20 October 2009, Dan Petrescu’s Unirea Urziceni arrived at Ibrox seeking their first Champions League victory. Rangers took an early lead through a deflected effort, but Marius Bilașco equalised before half-time.

A penalty save and a decisive second half

Daniel Tudor saved Steven Davis’s penalty with the score level. After the interval, own goals from Kyle Lafferty and Lee McCulloch put Unirea ahead, before Pablo Brandán’s free-kick completed a 4–1 victory.

A night that changed direction

Rangers scored early, but the match did not follow the expected course. Bilașco’s equaliser kept Unirea in it, and Tudor’s penalty save prevented the home side regaining the lead. After the break the visitors made the most of set pieces and defensive errors. By the end, the Romanian debutants had their first Champions League win.

A landmark for Urziceni

The win gave Unirea a major result in their first Champions League campaign. The clubs drew 1–1 in the return fixture. Unirea eventually finished third in the group and continued in the Europa League: the Ibrox victory was a milestone within that wider campaign.
