The holders in the first round

When the 1970/71 European Cup draw paired UTA Arad with defending champions Feyenoord, the Romanian side faced a daunting challenge. The Dutch club had conquered Europe only months earlier, and their squad included a host of internationals under manager Ernst Happel. Few expected the champions’ title defence to end at the first hurdle.

A priceless goal in Rotterdam

On 16 September 1970, more than 57,000 spectators gathered at De Kuip. In the 15th minute, Florian Dumitrescu met a cross from Mircea Axente and headed UTA into a remarkable lead. Wim Jansen equalised ten minutes later, but goalkeeper Gheorghe Gornea and the Romanian defence held firm. UTA returned to Arad with a 1–1 draw and a valuable away goal.

The eighth wonder

Feyenoord remained confident before the return. Happel is widely quoted as saying that a Romanian qualification at his team’s expense would be an eighth wonder of the world. Whether recalled in exactly those words or not, the phrase became inseparable from the story of the tie.

A heroic afternoon in Arad

On 30 September, the return leg brought an enormous crowd to Arad. Coach Nicolae “Coco” Dumitrescu’s team played with discipline and determination against the reigning European champions. Feyenoord pressed forward, while UTA defended resolutely and also created opportunities of their own. After a tense afternoon, the match ended goalless.

Two draws, one extraordinary qualification

The aggregate score was 1–1, but UTA’s goal in Rotterdam sent the Romanian champions through on away goals. Without winning either leg, UTA had eliminated the holders of the European Cup. What followed became part of Romanian football folklore. The team from Arad had accomplished what many considered impossible, turning Happel’s famous prediction into reality. More than half a century later, UTA’s triumph over Feyenoord remains one of the greatest giant-killings achieved by a Romanian club in European competition.
