Romanian club’s score first.

A domestic rivalry on a European stage

The 2005/06 UEFA Cup quarter-final brought Rapid București and Steaua București together in an exceptional encounter for Romanian club football. Both had reached the last eight; the draw guaranteed a Romanian semi-finalist, while ensuring that one of the two campaigns would end.

The first leg at Giulești

On 30 March 2006, Rapid hosted the first leg at Giulești. Bănel Nicoliță gave Steaua an early lead, before Viorel Moldovan equalised after half-time. The match finished 1–1, leaving the tie open but giving Steaua an away goal.

A goalless return, a decisive away goal

The return on 6 April took place at the Lia Manoliu stadium. Neither side scored. The aggregate result remained 1–1, and Steaua qualified on the away-goals rule. Rapid were eliminated without losing either quarter-final match.

Two campaigns, one shared chapter

Cosmin Olăroiu’s Steaua progressed to face Middlesbrough, while Răzvan Lucescu’s Rapid finished their campaign in the quarter-finals. The tie belongs to both clubs’ European histories: a Bucharest rivalry played for a place among the competition’s last four.

A city divided for a European semi-final

Bucharest had two clubs in the last eight, but only one could go further. Nicoliță’s early away goal gave Steaua an advantage that Moldovan’s equaliser did not entirely remove. The return stayed goalless, and that goal at Giulești became decisive. Both clubs had earned their place in the quarter-final; the away-goals rule separated them.
